MP Blades Girls Hockey Take Over Gander....And the Mount Pearl Christmas Parade

This was a big weekend for our Mount Pearl Blades Girls Hockey Program.

We had four teams representing Mount Pearl in Gander for their invitational tournament, over 55 players and coaches taking over the community! Back home, we had our U9 Girls holding down the fort at the Glacier while leading the charge at the Mount Pearl Christmas Parade.

It all started with an early Friday game for our U11s in Gander with players and parents hitting the road early Friday morning. Our U11s faced some strong competition. A thrilling tournament opener against Twillingate followed by an intense match up with our Metro rivals, Northeast. We witnessed a giant step forward for this team in terms of their compete level, hockey awareness, and overall team dynamic. The team building got even stronger after raiding Candy Korner, Dollar Store, the local Trampoline Park and Jungle Jim’s. They held a competitive ugly Christmas sweater event and took in Gander’s Christmas of Lights Parade in a bone chilling -8.

Our U13s competed hard in every game, each game came down to the wire. They demonstrated strong support for one another on and off the ice, played well positionally, and took over the hallways of Gander’s finest hotel. The team had a big time game performance versus Deer Lake winning 2-1. Goaltending was at it’s finest lead by Rachel Reynolds.

We had two U15 teams compete in Gander. Mount Pearl Blue – who were without several key players, a big part of their puzzle – battled hard to a 2-2 draw with Grand Falls in their opener. Goaltender Amber Power stood tall the remainder of the tournament facing a lot of shots. Rumour has it her trapper needs replacing after being worn out.

Mount Pearl White began the tournament Friday night with an emotionally charged win versus the host team Gander. A rivalry that’s been developing over the past five years between various tournaments and summer ball hockey. MP White would face their rivals Gander again in the Championship game prevailing 4-2 to take home the gold.

We had U11 players jump in and play with the U13 team when needed, and U13s play up with our U15s. We saw Mount Pearl teams coming to the rink to cheer on other Mount Pearl teams. Most notably in the U15 Gold Medal Game a majority of players stuck around Sunday morning to watch and cheer them on, the U15 girls on the ice definitely noticed!

Congratulations to Emily Sleep (U11), Maria Higgens (U13), Mia Barrett (U15 Blue), and Brooklyn Sturge (U15 White) on their ‘Player of the Tournament’ awards. Congratulations to Mount Pearl U15 White on their Gold Medal.

Back home it was all smiles as our U9 Girls represented our Program in the Community Christmas Parade. If you didn’t see them, try and catch a video. They can each add community choir to their resume.

Thanks again parents for everything this past weekend, you should all be proud.  A special thanks to Team Managers Joanne (U9), Tracy (U11), Patti (U13), Tanya (U15), and Jill (U15) for all of the organizing and scheduling. The girls really enjoyed the experience. And to Coaches, thanks for all your help leading our teams on and off the ice.

We still have a lot of hockey to play, very proud of our teams and our association, especially this past weekend.
